Dermal filler aftercare is an essential part of the procedure. Many people assume that their dermal filler procedure is over when the final injection is given and they walk out the door. However, for the best possible results, it's imperative that dermal filler aftercare is maintained. At Avenue 1, we've been providing dermal filler treatments in Detroit and the surrounding area for years, and we always stress the importance of aftercare. So today, we're talking about exactly what you should and shouldn't do after your procedure is over.

What to Expect After Dermal Filler Treatment

Immediately following your dermal filler treatment, you may experience some or all of the following. Remember these are a totally normal immediate result of the injections. They are not indicative of your final outcome.

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Needle marks
  • Asymmetry
  • Tenderness
  • Itching in the treated area

These issues are a common initial reaction to the dermal filler treatment and will resolve over the course of a few days to a week.

Dermal Filler Aftercare

A dermal filler treatment may technically end after the final injection is placed, but aftercare plays an incredibly important role in the overall success of the procedure. The time immediately following your dermal filler injections is critical to the outcome of your session. These aftercare tips will help alleviate minor swelling and discomfort, ensure the filler stays where it should, and generally produce a better overall effect if you follow the instructions you're given.

Immediate Dermal Filler Aftercare

There are a few things to keep in mind for the first few hours after treatment.

  • Don't touch your face for at least a hours following the procedure. This ensures the treatment area remains as clean as possible.
  • After 6 hours, you can gently clean your face with water and a gentle cleanser.

The First 24 Hours

The bulk of your dermal filler aftercare takes place in the first few hours and days after treatment. You should only need to take special care for the first couple of days. During this time:

  • Don't expose the area to intense heat such as a solarium or sauna for a couple of days.
  • Sleep on your back for a few nights to avoid pressure on the treated areas.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours.
  • Don't use AHA, retinol, vitamin C therapies, or oil-based makeup for 24 hours.

Ongoing Dermal Filler Aftercare

While the majority of your aftercare will take place in the first hours and days after your treatment, there are a few things that should be done for 3 days to a week after your dermal filler treatment.

  • Use a soothing topical treatment like Bepanthen or Arnica cream 3 times a day for about a week to help soothe the skin.
  • Avoid alcohol use for 7 days.
  • Avoid supplements like St. Johns wort, ginkgo biloba, primrose oil, garlic, ginseng, and vitamin E for 1 week.
  • Do not receive any kind of facial, waxing, chemical peels, skin needling, microdermabrasion, IPL, or laser treatments for 2 weeks after your dermal filler treatment.
  • Don't skip your 4-week aesthetic review
